The Consultation Process

Detailed, unhurried, and built to leave you with a plan.

LAW WISE PROFESSIONAL CORPORATION — MISSISSAUGA · BRAMPTON · TORONTO

The Consultation Process

A consultation at Law Wise is not a sales meeting. It is a working session with a lawyer, and it is deliberately unhurried: our consultations are rarely shorter than a full hour, because rushed advice is unreliable advice. By the time you leave, you should understand where you stand, what your realistic options are, and what each option is likely to cost — whether or not you decide to retain us.

Consultation Process

There is no obligation to retain the firm after a consultation.

Consultations are rarely shorter than an hour. You tell your story; we askquestions; nothing is rushed.
Leave with a plan

Leave with a plan

You leave knowing your options, our recommendation, realistic timelines, and howfees would be structured if you retain us.

Before You Come In

A short conflict check happens when you book: we confirm that the firm has never acted for the other side of your matter, which the Law Society of Ontario’s conflict rules require of every firm. Then, if you can, send us the documents that matter before the meeting — a separation agreement, a termination letter, an agreement of purchase and sale, court documents, a refusal letter from IRCC, or the correspondence that started the problem. A lawyer who has read your documents in advance can spend the whole consultation on advice.
If documents are hard to gather, come anyway. A clear account of events, with dates, is a good starting point, and we will tell you exactly what to collect afterward.

During the Consultation

You will meet with a lawyer — not an intake assistant — and the conversation has three parts. First, your story: what happened, what you are worried about, and what outcome you actually want. Second, the law: we explain, in plain language, how Ontario law treats your situation and what a court or tribunal would likely focus on. Third, the plan: the realistic paths forward, what we recommend and why, what each path tends to cost, and what you can do yourself to keep costs down.
Everything you tell us in a consultation is confidential, whether or not you retain the firm. That duty is owed to prospective clients as well as clients under the Law Society’s rules.

After the Consultation

There is no pressure and no obligation. If you decide to retain us, we prepare a written retainer agreement that sets out the scope of the work and exactly how fees will be calculated — see our Fees page for how those arrangements work. If your matter is outside what we do, we will say so and, where we can, point you to someone suited to it.
